Project Overview
Texas Asphalt network approached Austin Visuals to develop a high-impact explainer video for an ambitious unique infrastructure campaign: “50 miles in 50 days.” The innovative plan originated from a member contractor who should be recognized for the achievement. Bolt-On relies on more than intuition—it’s grounded in sound engineering, supported by design methods already in TxDOT’s playbook. The foundation of the approach is Heavy Duty Pavement (HDP), a durable, performance-based structure developed collaboratively by TxDOTand industry experts to meet the demands of high-volume roadways.
The goal was to showcase the ability to deliver large-scale road construction projects on an accelerated timeline, with minimal disruption to daily traffic. The animation needed to balance technical accuracy with wide public accessibility, making it suitable for digital advertising, stakeholder presentations, and social media outreach.
The Challenge
The core challenge was translating a complex, multi-phase construction process into a story that was easy to follow and visually compelling. The video had to demonstrate multilayer road construction, smart traffic management techniques, and advanced equipment. Another key challenge was integrating various media: real drone footage, stock video, and CAD-based models, all while maintaining visual and branding consistency.
The Solution
Austin Visuals created a 3D animation that began with a realistic depiction of severe traffic congestion, highlighting the need for infrastructure upgrades. The story then transitioned into visualizations of road expansion and improved traffic flow—showing the tangible benefits of the “50 miles in 50 days” initiative.
To make the narrative relatable, the animation used a first-person perspective of a commuter dealing with daily traffic delays. This perspective shifted into a post-construction scene, revealing smoother roads and faster travel times.
Technically detailed cutaway animations were developed from client-provided CAD files to illustrate the step-by-step road-building process. These included visualizations of material layering, compaction, and surface finishing. Key milestones and goals were emphasized with clean text overlays. Licensed background music and professional voiceover helped guide viewers and elevate the overall tone of the piece.
Throughout production, Austin Visuals collaborated closely with the contractor’s team—reviewing scene drafts, iterating on storyboards, and ensuring the final delivery met expectations on all fronts.
The Results
The final animation clearly demonstrated the contractor’s efficiency and innovation in infrastructure development. By blending real-world footage with detailed 3D animation, the video made technical concepts accessible to the public while enhancing the credibility of the initiative.
Delivered on time and within budget, the video is now being used across multiple platforms including internal presentations, investor pitches, social media, and industry events.
