At Austin Visuals 3D Animation Studio, we recently had the opportunity to work with Global Komatsu to develop a 3D animated video that showcases the startup sequence of their electric machinery compared to traditional diesel models. The goal of the video was to highlight the quicker startup of the electric machine and its life cycle advantages over diesel engines. Komatsu needed a clear, visually engaging representation that would appeal to their audience and emphasize their innovative technology.
The Challenge
Komatsu approached us with a specific request: to create a video that clearly demonstrates the differences between electric and diesel machinery. The video needed to feature a quick startup and pull-away sequence for the electric vehicle, contrasting it with the slower warm-up required for the diesel model. The graphics would also need to illustrate the life cycle of the machine, using dynamic visuals such as spinning arrows and graphs.
With a tight deadline and intricate technical details, our team was tasked with creating several highly detailed 3D models, building solar panels, batteries, and computer interfaces while also animating human characters and a construction site.
The Solution: Blender as the Chosen Tool
After reviewing Komatsu’s storyboard and requirements, we decided to use Blender as the platform for production. Blender’s versatility allowed us to create the complex 3D models and animations necessary for this project. Here’s how we approached the project:
- 3D Models and Modifications: Komatsu provided several rigged models in Maya, including an autonomous dozer, excavator, and road grader. We enhanced these models by adding solar panels and batteries to fit the narrative of sustainable energy solutions. Additionally, we built custom 3D models for a haul truck and a variety of construction props.
- Character Animation and City Environment: We animated several characters, including workers, operators, and even a dog walker, to add a realistic and human touch to the construction environment. The city background featured a detailed layout of buildings, a cell tower, car chargers, and electric-powered equipment, emphasizing the electric vs. diesel comparison.
- Custom Graphics and Visual Effects: To clearly convey the startup sequence and the machine’s life cycle, we integrated various graphics, such as arrows, gauges, and indicators. These visual elements were designed to be informative yet visually engaging, with the added challenge of creating complex GUI (Graphical User Interface) elements for the control panels and equipment displays.
- Realistic Lighting and Rendering: We used semi-realistic lighting to showcase the construction site at different times of day, providing a dynamic feel to the video. The 1920 x 1080 HD format was chosen for its high-quality output suitable for Komatsu’s presentations.
