3D Commercial Animation for Dunkin’ – Interactive Character Animation
Project Overview
Austin Visuals produced a set of custom 3D animated mascot characters for an interactive brand activation developed for Dunkin’. The animation was commissioned by MOZEUS Media, an interactive media company responsible for designing and coding a festival-based booth experience along the U.S. East Coast.
The final deliverables featured a dancing coffee cup character and a dancing ice cube character, designed to be integrated into a live, interactive installation where festival attendees could select a character, mimic its dance, and receive a recorded video of their participation.
The Challenge
This project presented a unique set of creative and technical challenges:
-
The characters originated as approved 2D sketches not designed with animation constraints in mind
-
The animation required human-style choreography applied to non-human objects
-
Dunkin’ brand guidelines required strict color accuracy even under 3D lighting
-
The final animation needed to loop cleanly and integrate into a custom-coded interactive system
-
A fixed festival deadline required efficient iteration and early decision-making
The core issue was not simply animation—it was translating static 2D character art into physically believable, readable 3D motion.
Consulting Before Production
Before animation began, Austin Visuals advised MOZEUS Media and Dunkin’ on a key risk:
locking a 2D character design before understanding how it would move in 3D.
Because these were fantasy mascot characters—not humans—movement would be dictated by:
-
Body proportions
-
Arm length and reach
-
Leg height and joint placement
-
Balance and center of gravity
Austin Visuals strongly recommended refining character proportions before rigging, explaining that once a character is rigged, major structural changes can significantly impact animation quality and schedule.
Character Development – Coffee Cup
The coffee cup character evolved through several rounds of refinement:
-
Eye placement and scale were adjusted to maintain readability at a distance
-
Legs were added after early concepts featured feet attached directly to the cup
-
Shoe size was reduced from oversized “clown” proportions to improve balance
-
Arm length was extended to allow recognizable dance gestures
-
Decisions were made around stylized vs. realistic knees
A key technical challenge involved Dunkin’ brand colors. While 2D brand colors are flat and exact, 3D lighting naturally introduces shading and falloff. Austin Visuals calibrated materials and lighting to remain brand-accurate while still reading as true 3D objects.
Character Development – Ice Cube
The ice cube character required similar proportional analysis:
-
Initial designs featured short, “stubby” arms
-
Austin Visuals advised increasing arm length so dance movements—such as “around the world”—would read clearly
-
Leg height and joint style were refined to balance playfulness with motion clarity
Once the need for legs was established with the cup character, the ice cube design followed a consistent animation logic.
Animation & Technical Execution
Final production included:
-
Two unique dance animations per character
-
Fully rigged, custom 3D characters
-
Loop-safe animation designed for interactive playback
-
Brand-accurate materials and lighting
-
Export formats compatible with MOZEUS Media’s custom installation software
The animations were engineered to work seamlessly within a live festival activation, where attendees could choose a character, perform a dance, and receive a recorded output.
Results
The interactive installation launched on schedule and was reported as a success. The characters adhered to Dunkin’ brand standards while remaining expressive, readable, and engaging in a live environment.
This project demonstrates Austin Visuals’ ability to:
-
Translate 2D brand concepts into functional 3D characters
-
Advise clients on animation feasibility before production
-
Balance creative intent with technical reality
-
Deliver animation designed for interactive, real-world deployment
Why This Matters
Mascot animation is not just about visual style—it is about movement logic, proportion, and expectation management. This project highlights the importance of consulting early in the pipeline to avoid costly revisions later.
Austin Visuals regularly supports agencies and brands by solving these problems before animation begins.
