Uranium Mining Explainer Video – Public Communication & Education
Project Overview
Austin Visuals developed a 6 minute mixed-media explainer video to support a long-term public communication effort focused on uranium remediation and land restoration. The purpose of the video was to clearly and respectfully explain why uranium extraction was necessary, how it would be done safely, and how the land would be restored afterward.
This project required far more than visual polish. It demanded cultural sensitivity, technical accuracy, and careful narrative framing to rebuild trust in communities historically impacted by mining activity.
The Communication Challenge
The organization behind this project had been working for over a decade to address uranium contamination on tribal land. Previous mining practices—by other operators—had created environmental harm and long-standing mistrust.
The core challenge was not awareness, but credibility.
The video needed to:

Strategic Approach
Austin Visuals worked closely with the client and subject matter experts to refine the message, structure, and visual approach before animation production began.

Selecting a visual language that emphasized clarity, respect, and neutrality
The client selected one visual approach from several concepts developed by Austin Visuals, and production moved forward in structured phases.
Visual & Technical Execution
The final video used a mixed-media approach, chosen intentionally to support clarity and credibility:

Custom 3D animation to explain uranium extraction and remediation processes

2D motion graphics and custom illustration for historical and conceptual context

Carefully selected stock video and B-roll

Limited use of AI-assisted video tools where appropriate

Iterative animatics to lock pacing and structure before final animation
Austin Visuals worked in coordination with the client’s internal media team, which had proper access and permitting for mining sites. When additional reference imagery or footage was required, requests were coordinated through approved channels.
Voiceover & Language Considerations
Early development included an AI-generated narrator to test pacing and tone. As the project matured, the client requested a professional human narrator with a voice appropriate to the subject matter.
The final English-language version features a professionally recorded narrator selected for tone, credibility, and cultural appropriateness.
A second version is currently in progress, featuring authentic Navajo-language narration, ensuring the message is accessible and respectful to native speakers within the community.

This project involved close coordination across multiple stakeholders on both the client and production sides.

The video is now being used as part of broader outreach efforts to support understanding and dialogue, rather than promotion.
